Lag Pressure and Hinge Retention Through Transition
"Create more lag" is common advice, but most golfers already form plenty of hinge at the top. The real gap is usually how much of it survives into the downswing.
Lag, in golf instruction, usually refers to the angle retained between the lead forearm and the shaft as the downswing begins. It's frequently discussed as something to "create," which implies the problem is a lack of hinge formation. In our session data, that's rarely the actual issue — most golfers form a reasonably large hinge angle at the top. What varies enormously is how much of that angle survives the first third of the downswing before it starts to release.
What Retention Actually Measures
We define retention as the percentage of your peak hinge angle still present at a fixed point in the downswing — typically when the lead arm reaches roughly parallel to the ground on the way down. A golfer who forms 90 degrees at the top but is down to 40 degrees by that checkpoint is releasing early; a golfer holding 65 degrees at the same checkpoint is retaining lag much more effectively, even with a smaller peak angle to start.
Why Early Release Happens
Early release is often a grip and equipment issue as much as a technique one. A grip that requires active hand tension to hold the angle can fatigue within the first move of transition, especially under the added pressure of a tournament round or a tight lie. A shaft that loads and unloads quickly can also encourage the angle to spend itself sooner than intended, independent of technique.
Retention is a percentage, not a degree count. A smaller peak angle that survives longer into the downswing usually outperforms a bigger peak angle that releases immediately.
What Actually Improves Retention
In our sessions, the two biggest levers for retention are grip taper (a more aggressive taper generally supports a more passive, longer hold) and shaft tip stiffness (a firmer tip resists early loading). Neither of these shows up on a standard fitting chart built around swing speed alone, which is part of why retention issues often go undiagnosed for years.

If you've been told to "create more lag," it's worth checking whether the issue is really formation at the top or retention on the way down. The fix for each is different, and equipment changes aimed at the wrong one won't move the number that's actually limiting you.
